If you’ve gotten your website to the top of Google or other search engines, you’re likely focused on maintaining those rankings. With the arrival of Mobilegeddon, business owners are more nervous about keeping their Google rankings in place than ever. However, there’s no need to fret. Knowledge can eradicate fear. Follow these five tips, and you can rest easier knowing you’re doing everything in your power to maintain search rankings.

1. Monitor Search Results

First, you need to know if you’re in or out. Perform a site search by typing “site:” then your domain name into Google as shown in the example below:

If pages from your site show up, then it’s in Google’s index. Check periodically, looking for consistent trends in the number of pages indexed. You can view the video below from Google for more details:

Next, you’ll want to know where you’re ranking. Sign into Google Webmaster Tools and view the Search Queries report in the Search Traffic section. The report tells you the queries you rank for, their average positions, impressions, clicks, and click-thru rates.

With these tools, monitor your indexing and take note of any sudden changes to rankings, impressions, or clicks.

2. Attract Links

Top Google rankings likely indicate you were able to attract relevant, high quality backlinks. Continue building on that momentum by promoting your site in the right ways. Take a few hours each week to prospect for new link partners and opportunities to have your best-ranked pages featured in social media.

Sharpen your link building skills with books like Ultimate Guide to Link Building written by link building experts Garrett French and Eric Ward.

3. Follow Quality Guidelines

The quickest way to lose Google rankings is to violate quality guidelines. Read and internalize Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. There are many rules to parse through, but the entire guidelines boil down to one principle: “Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.” Ensure your site follows the letter and spirit of the guidelines. Violating Google’s guidelines can result in algorithmic or manual actions and ultimately complete removal from search results.

4. Update Content

Keep your content up to date. One signal among the hundreds that go into rankings is freshness, a measure of how current a piece of content is. If there are legitimate updates to the content you’ve published, refresh it. Over time, newer content tends to push out older content, so it pays to keep content fresh. You’ll avoid the gradual slippage of your rankings over time.

5. Adapt to Algorithm Changes

Before you can adapt to algorithm changes, you have to be aware of what’s happening. Visit SEO industry news sites like Search Engine Land and Search Engine Watch. Follow the webmaster blogs from Google and Bing. If an upcoming algorithm change affects your site, follow the guidelines to better comply with the updates.

It’s definitely about attracting links NOT just building them if you want long term sustainable rankings in Google. You need to create an awesome website with awesome content your target market will actually care about, want to talk about and want to link to.
