Happy Monday! With Thanksgiving coming up, we’re shuffling this week’s blog around a bit and bring you an example site on Monday for a change. Today we’re going to look at Scarab Pictures, a fantastic photography portfolio site made by a Webs user. There are a lot of great things about this site that we talk about often — consistent branding, the use of imagery, simple navigation, etc. Another thing that Claire, the owner, is doing well is keeping a current blog for her business.

There are many reasons why a blog is a good idea for small businesses. First, clients and customers love a behind-the-scenes look at your operations. Some tidbits or photos or insights that they can’t get from reading your static webpage or marketing materials. Second, it allows for a two-way conversation to take place through comments, which creates a sense of community and increases your clients’ engagement with your brand. The third important reason to keep a blog has to do with driving traffic to your site — which is key to growing your business and getting new customers. That is to say, blogs are incredibly important for SEO. Here’s how:

1. Keeps your website current. When Google and other search engines crawl your site’s pages and find regularly updated content, that tells them that your page is current and dynamic. This increases your importance over a site that may have similar content but is not kept up to date.

2. Drives more traffic to your site. Having more blog entries out there on the internet creates more points of entry to your website. Rather than just having your homepage and the pages in your navigation for people to enter through, businesses with blogs have as many points of entry to their sites as they have blog posts.

3. Increases ranking through links. If you provide reliable, useful information, other bloggers and business owners will reference your writing in their posts and link back to your website (if they have manners). Not only will this drive traffic to you, it is also very important to Google. When search engines see that people elsewhere on the web trust you enough to link to your site, it greatly increases your search ranking.

    Posting a new blog post daily or at the very least 2 or 3 times a week definitely helps drive more traffic. Even though it is soooo challenging to do, if you will set a schedule and commit to keeping that schedule, then it will become easier as time goes on. Also you will see the increased traffic which will motivate you to keep going. All you have to do is get started and keep going. That’s the biggest challenge facing most bloggers who aren’t natural writers.
