Example Site Wednesday: Dapperhouse

Dapperhouse is the go-to place to find one of a kind vintage items and vintage inspired crafts.

At a first glance it is easy to see why we chose Dapperhouse for the example site this week. It utilizes plenty of Webs features including:

–          Etsy Store for easy product listing and Etsy integration
–          Members App to build up their community and encourage visitors to come back with e-mail blasts
–          Blog App to keep in touch and communicate with visitors and members
–          Links to other stores and websites to help search engine ranking

It also features a very aesthetically pleasing layout and template. These, however, are quite common characteristics of the awesome websites that our users create.

So what makes Dapperhouse stand above the rest of the pack and go beyond the average website?

Ask yourself this: What is the first thing you notice when you visit a website? Any website?

Chances are the first thing your eyes perceive is the website header. Website header is that very top portion of the site that is static (doesn’t change) and is visible on all pages as you browse from one page onto the other. Website header is often referred to as the “face” of a website.

The header is a crucial, yet is often neglected part of a website that can make or break the appeal of a site. A good header is a powerful branding tool and automatically tells visitors what your website is about and draws attention to the content. Good headers do not have to be elaborately designed images. Simple headers can be just as effective as long as they are well thought out.

Header Do’s!

Header DON’Ts

  • Be Creative!
  • Integrate your header design and simple website navigation to improve website usability.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a new approach.
  • Let your header represent your brand.
  • Use the same colors on your header as you use throughout your entire website.
  • Don’t leave your header space for granted.
  • Balance is the key. Too much design can be too distracting. Try to find “Zen” balance between being creative and overdoing it.
  • Don’t use your header space to spam. Remember your header space is a chance for creating your brand identity, it is not the spot for you to sell other stuff.

Knowing this… how does your header compare? Does it capture your visitor’s eyes? Edit your header today!

We’ve been sifting through a lot of great websites you suggested, but we are only picking the best of the best! If you think your website is up to the test, post a comment below and tell us why we should choose your website.

Until next time, we will be heading out. (Terrible pun intended)

    Hello Webs staff,

I believe that my website is worthy of being picked because it efficiently utilizes all of the many Webs features. Not only that, but it also gets quite a lot of views and online involvement. My website has even been integrated with top sites such as youtube and twitter, enabling quick and easy interaction among a wide variety of online users. And of course, a great deal of time has been put into the design of the website, as one can easily see.

    Thanks for considering my site,
    Piers Dennis

I made the best of webs features, the design of the site reflects the name, its a site about healing yourself by yourself. Easy to use, clean, simple.. overall making hard things to understand easy to comprehend because simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Good website. Thanks for the header info. I know I was having major headaches with my header until I got some help with it. Now I need to figure out how to recreate it so I can change the photos after each event. Keep it up to date.
photoshop – sigh. more learning to do.

Request – can the next website featured not be a site that sells something. Something more along the lines of an info exchange or sports related type of site. That is more up my personal interest line.
    Thanks webs!!!

Some very good information there about headers, thank you for that. My website reflects the growing community of Expats/English intergrating into the community of Spanish residents in the small market town of Sax, Alicante. Spain.

The site is quite young as we only have 17 registered members on the site, but can boast 140 members who visit the club house. Not all members have internet but can access it from the club, we try to get the two communbities together on club nights by holding bi-lingual sessions of Quizzis, Bingo, Music, Fashion shows, and exchanging meals. I make use of the Calendar, Registered Members only page, Bolg, and have just added our shop selling branded goods to help raise funding to improve the website and club funds.

I would also like to be given advice on how to improve the site if that’s possible?

    Thank you.

I changed the header picture a few days ago from a standard template (comic style picture) to a decent J-Peg that was more specific to what we offer and the conversions have risen sharply – just shows the power of getting the header right. We’ve still got work to do though please don’t be hyper critical just yet! 😉

As webs.com send out new apps and ideas I follow up on them and make any changes necessary. This is my first try with HTML but I think it turned out pretty well. Its not much, just a homepage, affiliates page, a request page, and about me page, a graphics page (under construction), and a staff page, but I think the layout is good and the content friendly. Also, If ANYONE has ANY ideas for my site( http://www.trinitite.webs.com ), I would very much appreciate them.

I’m NOT asking to be featured because, unfortunately, I’ve had to “hide” my member & guestbook pages due to spammers. Somehow they still found them, so I had to password protect them. As for your “support portal,” I’d call it laughable.

I don’t know if my website is worthy of being on your list, but people who have seen it and contacted us about doing shows for them had comments like “loved your website”, “great website”, “easy to navigate”, and “very informative”. Even if it doesn’t make the cut to be an example website I would appreciate a professional, unbiased opinion. We are a non-profit organization so we use the free service. Unfortunately we have to live with the ads across the top of our page for now.

It is tiring talking to business owners that don’t understand what web designers have known for years. A website is an extension of a brand and represents the owner online. A cheap website says cheap owner and so on. One day maybe…

Many initial website designs incorporate a lot of decorative elements that really serve no purpose. While it’s not necessary to remove every decorative element from your designs, removing at least some of them can often make your site appear cleaner and more polished.
