National Small Business Week Poster

The second biggest holiday in the Small Business world is coming up in just about a month, and it’s time to start planning how you can get involved. National Small Business Week takes place May 1st -7th here in the U.S., and this year’s theme is “Dream Big, Start Small.”

Created by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) back in 1963, National Small Business Week provides:

“An opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and other from across the nation.” (SBA)

We could go on and on about how important content marketing is to any small business marketing plan (and we have). We’ve talked before about creating a LinkedIn Showcase Page for your small business. And what that’s definitely an important milestone in any business’s marketing evolution, what about the entrepreneur who started it? In many cases, businesses start out as one person offering a product or service – like a photographer, accountant, blogger, or a wedding planner. In these cases, the first step might be to make the most of something you should already have: your personal LinkedIn Profile.

Have you ever taken a moment to think about how similar social media is to high school movie? No really, stay with me here. There is a central cast of five or six archetypal characters, and then all the satellite people whose names you know but you really don’t spend much time thinking about.

If Facebook is the popular quarterback, and Twitter is the super cool geek, and Pinterest is the artsy girl with paint on her overalls, then LinkedIn has always kind of seemed like the editor of the newspaper. Someone who is well-liked and respected, but lacks the style and star-power of the rest of the crew. Well, like any good high school movie, this social media story contains an exciting makeover that will (hopefully) result in a dramatic turn in LinkedIn’s popularity.


As we continue with our discussion of ways to leverage your local community for your small business, we would be remiss not to talk about local clubs and organizations.

There are a number of benefits to joining local organizations. First, it’s a great way to network with other business owners who you might be able to partner with in the future. Also, your business might offer a product or service that an individual in the organization would be interested in. Or maybe you are looking to learn from people who have gone before you and benefit from their knowledge on things like local laws and ordinances, vendors they’ve used, opportunities you might not have heard about, etc. Finally, when you attend functions and are a part of a group, the other members feel a sense of loyalty and genuinely want to help your business succeed through referrals.
