If you just need a little more convincing, the folks over at text marketer got you covered.

LinkedIn tips

We’ve talked before about creating a LinkedIn Showcase Page for your small business. And what that’s definitely an important milestone in any business’s marketing evolution, what about the entrepreneur who started it? In many cases, businesses start out as one person offering a product or service – like a photographer, accountant, blogger, or a wedding planner. In these cases, the first step might be to make the most of something you should already have: your personal LinkedIn Profile.

Small business set up infographic header

Many small businesses start as a hobby, and then take over a larger and larger percentage of the owner’s time until the proportions flip and the hobby has replaced a full time job. And while this gradual evolution is certainly logical, it can also lead to skipping some important steps when setting up a business.

If you’re thinking about starting a business – or maybe just want to check your progress – have a look at the infographic below. It details the 10 steps necessary for a business to get started on a solid foundation. In short, they are:

How to become a Google Plus Wizard

Do you ever feel that nagging sense that you’re forgetting to do something important? Something that could really benefit your business and your own personal brand, if only you could remember what it was? Psst…that thing you keep forgetting to do is learn how to use Google Plus effectively.

For all of it’s brilliant functionality, attractive design, and good market awareness, Google Plus has still not achieved the social media superstar status it probably should have. Why? There are lots of theories, but one that I find compelling is that people are simply burned out on learning new social platform rules. This theory leaves out the industry experts and savvy social users who seamlessly adopt new tech. It more explains the masses who, having dedicated themselves to learning the ins and outs of Facebook for so long, simply can’t bring themselves to learn the new rules and subtle intricacies of another sophisticated platform.

McDonalds Tweets Back at Taco Bell

The Inbox Diaries is a new series designed to help busy entrepreneurs keep up with all the latest news in small business, marketing, and social media. I’m scouring my inbox every day for interesting tidbits – so you don’t have to.

This Week’s Stories:

The Best Offense Is A Good Defense: McDonald’s vs. Taco Bell
When Taco Bell launched its breakfast menu on March 27th, it fired the first shot in the Fast Food Breakfast War against the industry leader, McDonald’s. After watching the launch commercial in which Taco Bell showed dozens of real men named Ronald McDonald chowing down on Waffle Tacos, the world waited with baited breath to see how McDonald’s would respond. For a brand whose mascot is a clown, I found the two-pronged response to be nicely understated. First, McDonald’s announced that for the next 2 weeks they will be giving away their much-praised McCafe coffee free during breakfast hours. This costs the company almost nothing, but provides an incentive for diners to choose their brand while all the hype around Taco Bell fades to the background.  They also shared a classy but pointed tweet that patronizes Taco Bell to just the right extent:

It’s an overcast Friday afternoon just after lunch, so this seems like an appropriate time to talk about boosting your productivity. It’s also a great time to scour the web for great infographics, like the one you’ll find below from Middlesex University in London. Many of the university’s graduates go on to start small businesses, so to lend them a helping hand, the school created a collection of their favorite (sorry,
favourite, this is from London) apps that can make life simpler for small businesses.

It’s Friday afternoon, which means it’s the perfect time for a colorful and informative infographic! This one comes from LinkedIn – specifically their Talent Solutions brand – and it sheds some light on their December 2013 survey of 18,000 employees in 26 countries. (Love LinkedIn? Check out Monday’s post about Influencers)

One of the most interesting findings displayed in this graphic is the fact that of the 72% who said they were either “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their jobs, only 18% said that the would not consider changing jobs. While ambition is great, some employers might find it a little disturbing to know that even their very satisfied employees might walk out the door if the right opportunity presented itself.
