Another Wednesday has approached us, which means it’s time to showcase another well-made website. Today, we will be taking a look at Kikulu, a nonprofit website that seeks to create awareness and involvement among children at home on how they can each help make a difference.

Upon landing on the homepage, I could already sense how effective Kikulu’s site was going to be. The color scheme, use of imagery and content all work well together in creating a well-designed homepage.

There are a number of successful tactics used in this site. A few of them include:

Clear Purpose or Goal: Communicating your business or organization’s goal is vital to give your site visitors a quick glimpse as to what you’re about. They’ll be a lot more like to stay on your homepage and surf your site if they understand your purpose.  As you can see from Kikulu’s site, they clearly give their audience a brief introduction and look into their mission–“Providing education for women and children around the globe.”

Consistent Color Scheme: Consistency is key. Kikulu does a great job of maintaining a sense of consistency.  Check out their complementary color choices and their fonts.  It’s not only consistent on their homepage, but also on every page of their website.

Effective Imagery:The use of a carousel slideshow to display effectual images, especially in this case of a nonprofit site, really creates a sense of pathos for the audience, thus drawing in more attention.

Social Media Presence: A presence on social media is proven to be a powerful asset for any business or organization. What better place to make that presence known than on your site’s homepage.   This site uses icons in their footer that link to Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo.  They’ve also added a live Twitter feed directly on their homepage.

Promote Your Business or Cause: Encourage your visitors to support your cause and actively participate. Directly on the homepage, Kikulu promotes contributions through donations and purchases through The Kikulu Shop.

These are just a few of the many different tactics to consider when building a homepage for your site.
