Site Review Wednesday: Before and After Possibilities

As part of our weekly series of showcasing example sites and providing helpful tips on how you can improve your website, this week we have selected to review Pamper Parties Pittsburgh. This is a website for a mobile spa business that can be awesome with just a few tweaks.

Let’s start out by focusing on what the site owner does well. Pamper Parties Pittsburgh is a great website title. It clearly describes what the business offers and where it is located. This site also does a nice job of using relevant keywords and offering an easy to understand site description.

So what can the owner do to improve this website?

Simplification is a key – Have you ever heard the expression of KISS? KISS stands for Keep It Short and Simple. It’s a popular marketing technique that emphasizes the importance of keeping the marketing message simple in order to gain the biggest impact.  This rule can be applied to this website.

To make their website more appealing to visitors, here’re our suggestions for improvement:

  • Consolidate the navigation bar – Currently the website navigation bar is cluttered by links providing description for various party types.

Consolidating these pages using drop-down menus can clean up some of the navigation bar clutter. We suggest using something like “Party Options”.Discover 3 tips for a more intuitive website navigation.
  • Simplify the background image – You only have a few precious seconds (if that) to entice your website visitors to stay and learn more about you/your business. Don’t distract their attention with loud background images. Remember the key is to get visitors to focus on what and who you are. Thus, when choosing a background image, select one that makes readability a snap and does not divert attention. Keep in mind that your website does not need to have a different background image for each one of your pages in order to be interesting. ;-)
  • Word clutter is not your friend –Formatting of your content plays a big role on your website. Remember visitors only have a few precious seconds to evaluate your offering, making your content easy to scan will improve your chances of visitors sticking around. Using formatting tricks such as bullet points, italicizing and spacing can help.

Here’s what this website could look like with just these few simple changes:

Site Review Wednesday: Before and After Possibilities

HERETICPRIME on December 7, 2011

The after is cleaner but lacks some of the style and spirit that the original had.

‘Perhaps a compromise?

The site after looks neat but not that colorful and attractive.

Yh the site before is quite bright and bold but the website after is too dull for the target visitor in my opinion. A few suggestions will be putting a more subtle background on the website to calm it down a little but still make it attractive. I do like the presentation on the second image – so add the presentation qualities to the first website, and using a more softer light pink background – and that would be ideal :) (I’m not really a one for background music because I find that not everyone likes the song but that’s just my opinion!) :) Good work!

Hi, I am the owner of this site, and am just seeing this review now. I was actually searching for spa party images, and came across the first image of my own site with the caption “this is a great website title”. Obviously I was intrigued. Thank you for the constructive criticism you provided. I totally agree that the navigation bar is a bit cluttered. I’m definitely going to look into consolidating this. However, I think I’ll keep my “loud” background images, as I’ve found that they actually do the opposite and grab visitor’s attention. I have had countless clients tell me that the visited my site because they were looking for a spa party, but stayed because they loved the way the site looked. I understand that for some businesses, a more subdued site would be ideal, but I am a party business. I want people to feel the fun when they click on my link! Also, about 80% of my business is done in children’s parties. Another reason that the bright colors and loud patterns are attracting customers for me.
