Drop-down menus for your sites are HERE!

Posted by in Webs Updates on

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of drop-down menus on Webs.com sites!

This update has been requested by many users, and has been in the works for quite some time here at Webs.   It’s a simple feature with huge implications; drop-down menus allow you to clean up the navigation bar on your website, better organizing your website and creating a more focused and guided experience for your site visitors.

See your website go from this:

Without Navbar Update

To this:

After Navbar Update

To make this feature work, you will notice your Site Manager has received a little update. You can now reorder and create dropdowns, right from the Site Manager.

How does the new system work?

  • Drag and drop pages up and down to change their ordering position
  • Drag and drop pages to the right to nest the page as a drop-down selection. This will automatically move the page into a dropdown menu beneath the page it is listed under.
Nest Pages in Site Manager

You can nest pages up to two levels deep, to create even richer navigation

This new feature opens up a whole new way for you to build your site, and for your users to navigate your site.  It’s simple to use, but makes a huge impact!

Need more help? Check out our how-to video.

A Few Useful Hints Towards a GREAT Navigation Bar.
Armed with this new tool in hand, here’s a few hints to making your site GREAT using dropdown navigation:

  • If your site uses a horizontal navigation bar, make sure it does not go beyond ONE ROW of navigation items.  Move pages into dropdowns to clean it up.
  • In general, you should avoid having more than 10 pages as top level navigation links.  Everything else should be set as a subpage.
  • You can create new rich navigation by manually adding links to your site.  Here’s how to manually add a link:Visit Site Manager -> Click “Add a New Page” -> Click “External Link” -> Type the link name and URL
  • Got a Webstore? This a GREAT feature for you!  Make your store even easier to browse by creating links to each of your store categories, then dragging those items as subpages under your Webstore page!

So those are just a few hints, but as always, we can’t wait to see the creative ways you make use of this new feature.

Please let us know what you think in the comments!

Hey webs! I really would love a search bar in the Arcade page. I know this really has nothing to do with the new thing you added (which I think is cool), but I really would like a search bar in the Arcade. Is this possible for you to add? If you added it, I would be super happy!!

Nice idea but a few problems with this.

The drop-down menus are no good if you have flash banners at the top of the page as they are hidden behind the banner so I cannot use them.

The other problem is that I have over 1100 pages on my site so obviously I can’t put them all as subpages, it would look ridiculous. However, under the old system I could reorder the hidden pages alphabetically under various subheadings, but with this system the hidden pages can’t be reordered and so any new pages go straight to the bottom and stay there. This makes it very difficult to find pages to edit when you have a lot of pages. Could you not put a tab against the hidden pages as well so these can be moved within that area?

When I went to Site Manager today I thought, “Wow, this is different”. And it is so easy to work with. I originally spent about 3 months looking for a site host that was inexpensive, easy to use and didn’t take all day to move from one page to another. I picked Freewebs. While I still can’t give you 10 out of 10 for stability (and I know you’re working on it) you’re pretty close when it comes to features and choice. Thanks Webs.

fantabulous!

The problem is that if for example I place About Us under Home, and then mouse over home, I see only About Us. Usually the home should show as the first option and then About Us.

Will you be fixing this soon? I hope.

It is s nice upgrade though, thanks.

I love this idea and have done the drop down pages to my liking, but when I view my site it does NOT show the pages as dro pdowns, they are all still in order.
I did click finish editing at the bottom of the dro pdown when I got done with doing it all, but it does not do the drop down menu when viewed.
Is there something else I have to do to make it work? I would love to consolidate my pages as I have so many.

The drop down menus are a very good idea. I have seen on the picture above that they seem to work. BUT, I think the problem is, is that they do not work for all templates. I tried it on my template I use and a few other ones and they did not seem to work without the fact that they covered up actual text on the page or they were un-clickable. Please look into this problem and email me.

Drop-down menu on side bar works very well and makes the website look far more simple by nesting items.

However, one MAJOR FAULT is that the drop-down menus is black background with dark blue text. It is very difficult to read. It would be far better to have white text on black background to maximise the contrast.

I hope that you can amend this ASAP.

I would like to say that this is a great feature, and it s helping me with my website alot. There is one quirk that gets me though. When a sub-page and created, it makes the sub-page heading, on the navigation menu, transparent. While this is good on alot of pages, I was wondering if there could be an option to allow the choice of sub-page headings, on the navigation bar, to be transparent of not.
Other that that, it is really really helpful.
Thank you!
