We are happy to announce that today, we pushed out a filter to cut down on the number of guestbook spam comments that our users have been receiving.  This has been a painful issue for a lot of you, to eliminate the problem we have been working silently on resolving this issue.  We believe that the new filtering system will greatly cut down on the number of such posts.

If after today you see other comments come through, please notify us so that we can continue to improve the filtering process.

Thank you for all your patience and understanding while we were working on this fix.

I just posted a question about this yesterday! I really hope this works. I rent my vacation cabin through my website and most people look at the guestbook comments. It bothered me that viagra type ads were being put in there.

I was just wondering if some type of approval process could be set up so all guestbook entries must be approved by the site administrator. This would keep them from getting to public view.

On behalf of any other users out there who will probably never say thanks to you either because they don’t want to or haven’t seen this blog post, THANK-YOU WEBS.COM!

Hello – I am glad to hear you fixed spam problem, but I seem to be experiencing a problem from one of mine. I had spam from someone who designs webpages earlier in the week. Since then, several of my members (including myself-listed as administrator) have been mysteriously removed from site. I have been unable to sign on as a regular member – can only log in on admin site.
    Can this be fixed?

@Meghan: You can attach a website to your websid through the dashboard (the first page you see upon logging in). If you create a new site using the same email address, the new site will show up in your dashboard with option to attach.

Thank you so much for the solution. :) While I haven’t had to many spammers drop by my guestbook, I’ve seen many other site owners have to drown in this kind of problem.

I’m grateful, but sadly everyone’s got to admit that most of the people sending spam (especially at guestbooks) are site owners from other Webs sites. -.-

This won’t stop the spammers, but its a great first step.

All i want to know is how do you classify between an honest comment and spam, how does that work? i would hate it a friend of mine would try to comment and it would mark him as spam.

@jules: Great question. Our filter works to detect bots since they behave very differently from the way you and I would online. Upon detecting such behavior the comment will be blocked.

It’s nice that you’ve fixed the spamming issue in the guestbook, but could you possible do it as well in the shoutbox? It has become really annoying and people tend to abuse it more and more.
I actually have deleted my shoutbox at this point and I would appreciate it if you could simply fix that.

I have been bombarded with guestbook garbage for a few weeks now and am sick of having to go in and delete them all daily. I sure hope your fix works. Having a site about saltwater Anemones and tanks and having guestbook signatures about Viagra are to say the least upsetting. So thanks for trying to fix this issue.

I never had so much spam in the Guestbook as the last two days, obviouisly this filter doesn’t work. I would love a way to approve of posts in the guestbook, seems the best solution. Right now I am removing spam from it about 6 times a day. Thank you for trying though.

My site has suddenly gone from 3 bona fide members, that it had for a year, to 50 members, that have no real interest in the group subject, in three days. Each new member, most from around the world, posts an introductory message that is advertizing their own web site or cause. A new form of spam! Someone must have written an article on how to use the freewebs groups to spread spam.

So . . . . .I changed the permissions so that new members have to be approved and changed the new members to limited. Now I have to go through and individually delete them.

I wish I could delete a bunch with one operation.
