I want to inform everyone of a change we are making to our core account structure and what it means for NEW websites that are created with Webs. As you know, in the past sites have been created with a username/password combination. The problem with this was that for those of you with multiple sites, it is hard to keep track of all these credentials. So we are moving to a new Master Account system called a “WebsID”. The WebsID is a unique email/password combination and serves as your master account. When we finish this release, all new accounts will be created under a WebsID master account. If you don’t have one, you can create one during signup. If you already have one, then you can simply login and create a new website without any need to create a new account or password. Logging in with a WebsID will bring you to a new “Dashboard” which will show you all your sites, and let you quickly jump from site to site for administration purposes.
The WebsID is also the same account you use to login to your site as a Member, and when you create new sites under this system, it will automatically set you as the “Site Owner”.
What about Admins? We know that some of you would like to collaborate on sites with more than one person. And we definately don’t want you to give out your WebsID password to anyone. That’s why we are working on a new system that will allow you to assign “Admins” to your site. Admins will see the sites they can administer from their dashboard and will be able to administer most parts of the site (except deleting it and removing the site owner).
When will this all be live?Currently, we are testing the new signup with a small percentage of new users. If all is good, we will be increasing traffic to the new signup flow over the course of this week. If you already have a WebsID (you can check by visint your “Site Settings” page), you can use the new Signup now by logging into Webs.com with your WebsID email/password, and clicking the “Create a Website” button on your master account Dashboard.
What else are we working on?Several things are getting close to release. One is a new video crunching solution to make video uploading work better. We are also working on several blog app updates including the ability to schedule posts in the future, as well as the ability to approve posts by members before they go live.
